Most crimes get as much publicity as the victim can
accomplish. If a car is stolen, the police, the family, and the
coworkers will know about it. If their house is vandalized then
they’ll gladly show it on the news. But there is one crime that
is seldom shared, and because of this, happens more frequently,
and that is rape.
People don’t feel comfortable talking about it,
especially if it has happened to them or a family member. It is
because of this that rape is the least reported crime in the
United States and Oregon. It is also the big reason why Oregon
is trying to increase it’s efforts in rape prevention.
Oregon Attorney General Hardy Myers said at a
statewide conference last week in Eugene on sex crimes, “The
community's collective silence about rape creates an atmosphere
where it's easier to commit the crime."
It is a horrible crime that affects young women
between the ages of 14-24 the most. One poll states that one
out of six women knows what it’s like to be forced into sex.
Most of these cases also reported that the individual was not a
stranger but rather someone close.
In almost all these cases the police won’t hear a
word about it. The person might share it with a counselor or
friends but the proper authorities will never be notified. This
is causing them to increase their efforts on the front of rape
prevention. They want to stop the problem before it ever
happens.
Oregon state agencies released a new prevention law
last month. They plan to target the young women between the
ages of 14-24. They will also be aiming at women with
developmental disabilities. In addition, they will be informing
young men that forcing someone into sex isn’t normal, contrary
to what many may think.
The new program aims at raising awareness in parents
and others with influence over young people. They will be
working closely to bring the message to girls more focused on
healthy relationships, deception, and the effects of drugs and
alcohol on judgment.
If the plan is too be successful it will require the
assistance from churches, families, schools, and especially
those who have gone through the ordeal themselves. Talking
about it seems to be the best preventative step anyone can
take, because the more this crime is brought to the surface,
the more the perpetrators will realize that they can’t get away
with it. It might be difficult for many, but it’s the only way
to protect the young women throughout Oregon.
